Is Claude blocked in China?
Yes — Claude is effectively unavailable in China: Anthropic does not serve China (vendor geo-restriction), on top of network filtering. The domain may still respond at a CDN edge — Voidly measures 77% raw network reachability — but that is not the same as the service working.
The situation
Two things make Claude unavailable in mainland China: the Great Firewall filters foreign services, AND Anthropic does not offer Claude in China (vendor geo-restriction). Both point the same way — unavailable.
How to read this verdict
claude.ai sits behind a CDN whose edge can still answer from inside China, so raw network-reachability can look high — but that is the edge responding, not Claude working. With Anthropic geo-restricting China, the honest verdict is unavailable; we show the raw reachability number only for transparency.
Voidly measures network reachability only — whether the service loads from inside the country. That is distinct from a provider declining sign-ups in a region (a policy layer we do not conflate with network blocking).
What people do about it
- A VPN to a supported region remains the reliable path.
- Provider terms still apply even where the network is reachable.
